来るべきものの予感 | The premonition of things unknown

TERRADA ART AWARD 2021
When this place (exhibition venue) was still underwater, a fisherman pulled up a shining mask. It is said that this place came to be called Tennozu because the mask was that of the Gozu Tenno (Ox-Headed Heavenly King). In 1798, a whale washed ashore, and the whale monument dedicated to it remains to this day. Afterward, the underwater part of Tennozu was reclaimed from the sea and used as the fourth battery for strengthening Japan's coastal defense against the Black Ships (of Perry's expedition). Currently, airplanes fly 450m above the venue as part of the new Haneda Airport flight route. From the cries of a whale far across the Pacific Ocean to the roar of airplanes overhead, what do these recurring sounds bring?
In this place, where layers of space have been transformed by mysterious entities from beyond the sea, let's contemplate its origins and emit the sounds of the future.
This work is a spectrogram, in which we convert video signals into audio signals and add the audio of whale songs. Then, we broadcast this through underwater speakers at the pier outside the venue. It is like a scroll depicting the cultural history of whales and humans. Lastly, the feedback picked up by the underwater microphone is sent back to the venue and portrayed in video and audio.
Kubo began his search for information with an initial impulse before cleverly incorporating chance and noise and changing the scope of his research while making a series of thoughtful choices like in a chain reaction. The result was a story that developed along a creative pathway that could not have been created through optimization. The story is broken down and developed through various devices that are installed inside and outside the exhibition space, which requires viewers to look at the work from various perspectives and decipher the relationship between them. The manner in which he transformed the high-dimensional information created by complex networks into a low-dimensional state that the body can recognize, turning it into a work that can be appreciated, is nothing short of magnificent. I have presented this award to Kubo in recognition of the meticulous research he conducted for the purpose of this project as well as his ambitious attempt that called for advanced execution, and I look forward to his future endeavors.
